Beneficiary Designations

February 01, 2024 • Rev. David Heetland

Did you know that, just as you can name St. Luke’s as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or a retirement plan, you can also name the church as a beneficiary of your brokerage account? This relatively new planning option is known as a Transfer On Death (TOD) arrangement. A TOD plan enables you to pass securities directly to St. Luke’s upon your death, bypassing probate.

A similar plan is called a Pay On Death (POD) arrangement. In this arrangement, a donor instructs a bank to pay St. Luke’s some or all of what remains in a bank account when the donor dies. Once again the assets pass directly to the church without going through probate.

These are very simple and attractive ways to make a planned gift to St. Luke’s, and they require no attorney to set up. Simply contact your brokerage firm or bank for the necessary beneficiary forms.
